Why, even after a century, has no country been able to build a bridge across the narrow 14 km gap between two colossal continents, Europe and Africa? The Strait of Gibraltar, between Spain and Morocco, is just 14 km wide, that’s even less than the distance between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, a stretch one can cross in under 30 minutes without traffic. If a bridge or tunnel connected these two nations, one could travel from Europe to Africa in under half an hour. The global impact of such a link would be immense. This tiny stretch sees nearly 100,000 ships and 18,000 oil tankers pass through annually. Around 33% of the world’s oil and gas, 50% of global trade, and 80% of the EU’s merchandise including electronics, raw materials, and cars—flow through this bottleneck. Yet, despite its enormous strategic value, not a single bridge has been built here in the last 100 years. But even the world’s most brilliant minds stop short here. Every idea ends in failure. Every engineering plan either remains confined to paper… or gets drowned in the depths of the sea. So the question is, what secret lies buried within the Strait of Gibraltar that crushes human ambition every single time?
