Conservation Biologist Matt Stephens shares innovative habitat solutions from the Private Land Conservation Matters program. Hunter Region Landcare Network is working in partnership with the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) to raise awareness and support for private land conservation efforts across the region. The  Private Land Conservation Matters Program brings together experts, landholders, and community members to share knowledge and practical tools that strengthen biodiversity outcomes on private land. In this feature, conservation biologist and inventor Matt Stephens explores how to create native fauna habitat using the Hollowhog system - a technique designed to fast-track the formation of tree hollows that are essential for many Australian wildlife species. Key messages from the session include: - Hollow loss over the past 200 years has been catastrophic, making it a critical conservation issue. - Natural hollows remain the gold standard and must be protected. - Hollowhog is a powerful tool that mimics natural processes to rapidly create usable habitat. - Even small-scale actions, such as creating hollows in younger or dead trees, can make a big difference. - Everyone can contribute to improving habitat; many solutions are accessible and impactful. This field day, Hollowhog vs Nestboxes, was held on Dharawal Country at Brunkerville on 10 August 2024 as part of the program’s ongoing commitment to practical conservation education.
